A 1988 idea about why some effort feels different from other effort
In 1988, educational psychologist John Sweller proposed Cognitive Load Theory to explain something that was obvious anecdotally but hard to prove: identical material can be easy or exhausting to work through, depending on how it — and everything around it — is structured.
The reason comes down to working memory: the small, temporary mental workspace you use to actively think, decide, and solve problems in the moment. It holds only a handful of new things at once. Past that point, performance doesn't decline gently — it falls off.

Engineering organizations have begun tracking cognitive load formally — not just for individual learners, but for entire teams. The same three-part split applies: intrinsic load is the work's real complexity, and extraneous load is the tax added by unclear ownership, tool sprawl, and constant context-switching between unrelated things.
A single calendar has the exact same blind spot. Just with an audience of one, and even less instrumentation.
